Dubai Municipality and Dubai South have signed a strategic partnership agreement worth AED 150 million to develop an advanced stormwater drainage system in Dubai South’s residential district. This initiative is part of the broader AED 30 billion Tasreef project, aimed at enhancing Dubai’s stormwater infrastructure. The project includes constructing a new secondary stormwater tunnel connecting Dubai South’s drainage network to Dubai Municipality’s deep tunnel system via Expo Road. This development is expected to significantly improve stormwater and surface runoff management, reduce flooding risks, and protect public and private assets, aligning with the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 .
The Tasreef programme, led by Dubai Municipality, is scheduled for completion by 2033 and aims to expand stormwater coverage across the emirate. Once operational, the system will manage over 20 million cubic metres of water daily, increasing drainage capacity by 700%. The project also aims to reduce construction and operating costs for pumping stations by 20% and includes the design and construction of deep tunnel infrastructure with a maximum flow rate capacity of approximately four cubic metres per second. This collaboration underscores Dubai’s commitment to sustainable urban development and its vision of becoming a global model for infrastructure resilience and urban excellence .
